Current Volunteer Opportunities:

General Housekeeping Volunteer

Do you have a few hours to spare each week and enjoy making spaces sparkle? Your help could make a world of difference for patients and families at ellenor Hospice.

Location: ellenor Hospice Gravesend

Hours: from 3 hrs per week
Times: 7 am–10 or 5–7:30 pm
Days: Monday to Friday and upon opening of the new café Saturdays and Sundays

The Role

As a Housekeeper Volunteer, you will help create a clean, welcoming, and uplifting environment by:

  • Dusting and polishing furniture
  • Emptying bins and keeping spaces tidy
  • Mopping, sweeping, hoovering and ensuring floors are clean and safe for visitors and staff
  • Sanitising high-traffic areas, doors, tables, buttons and handles

About you:

  • A friendly, helpful attitude
  • Attention to detail and pride in keeping spaces neat
  • Ability to work independently while completing your tasks

Your time and effort will help our hospice feel like home for those who need it most. This is a wonderful opportunity to give back and be part of an amazing team! 🌼

Volunteer Kitchen Porter

Location: ellenor, Coldharbour Rd, Northfleet, Gravesend DA11 7HQ
Hours: from 4-6 hrs
Times: Weekdays (11am-6pm) Weekends (8am-1pm or 1-6pm)
Days: Monday – Sunday, whichever days suit you best!

The Role

As a Volunteer Kitchen Assistant, you'll play a key role in supporting our team by:

  • Delivering meals to patients in the hospice, brightening their day with a smile
  • Keeping the kitchen and café clean, organised, and ready to serve
  • Helping with washing up and kitchen waste disposal
  • Prepping ingredients such as peeling and chopping vegetables, monitoring freezer stock, and ensuring proper food rotation for freshness

About You:

  • Warm and compassionate personality
  • Food Hygiene Level 2 or willing to undertake
  • Physically able to lift and stand for extended periods, and comfortable in a sensitive environment
  • Knowledge of allergens and nutrition requirements is beneficial

Volunteer Complementary Therapist

ellenor hospice offer patients and carers a range of complementary therapy treatments, with the assistance of qualified volunteers. 

Volunteers are the forefront of this essential patient service, providing important hands- on therapies to patients, carers and bereaved. 

We’d love to hear from you if you are qualified in aromatherapy, massage, reflexology or reiki (reiki as a second modality at level II or III)

Location: Therapy sessions are currently held off site at the Best Western Manor Hotel, Singlewell, DA12 5UQ.

Hours: We require volunteers on the following days and times, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday afternoons.

Requirements: You will be required to have qualifications at Level 3 Diploma in each modality, be a member of the relevant professional body for your therapy, have professional insurance, and be registered with the CNHC. (We will re-imburse you for your first year of registration if you are not already registered). 

Role

  • To deliver complementary therapies to patients, their carers and people who are bereaved
  • To provide therapy within an outpatient setting in a fit for purpose clinic room
  • To provide therapy on the inpatient ward at ellenor

You will also require an enhanced DBS check which we will arrange for you.

Wellbeing Therapeutic Activity Group Volunteer

Wellbeing volunteers are at the forefront of this essential patient service. They provide vital support to the ellenor staff, and facilitate a welcoming and comfortable environment; helping patients to relax, socialise and enjoy their day. A team of two to four volunteers work together on each shift.

Location: The Manor Hotel,Gravesend,DA12 5UQ

Hours: 10:00-15:00

Days: Tuesday, Wednesdays, Thursdays

Role

  • Greet patients as they arrive and help them to get settled – make them feel welcome by engaging in conversation
  • Help to welcome and integrate new patients by ‘showing them the ropes’
  • Refreshment provision to patients throughout the day as required – hot and cold drinks
  • Keep the kitchen area clean and tidy throughout the day, including use of the dishwasher (training provided)
  • Encourage patient involvement in Therapeutic Activity Groups, social, and recreational activities, and assist the person in participating in these
  • Work with patients in a 1 to 1 setting as directed by the Therapy Team
  • Conversations with patients and carers
  • Share information with ellenor staff relating to patients wellbeing
  • Be available for a pre-shift briefing from the Therapy staff – discuss any special needs of patients and the day’s proposed programme
  • Act as a ‘buddy’ for new volunteers, familiarising them with the daily routine and local procedures

Cafe Volunteer

Location: ellenor Hospice Gravesend

Hours: from 4 hrs per week
Times: 9 am–1 pm or 1-4 pm
Days: Monday to Friday and upon opening of the new café Saturdays and Sundays

As a Café volunteer, you will be at the heart of our hospice team, dealing with the café service within the hospice.

The Role

  • Serving patients, families, and staff at ellenor hospice on the register.
  • Food and drink service in line with dietary requirements and allergens.
  • Cleaning of equipment, surfaces, and café area. Sweeping, mopping, cleaning tables and furniture.
  • Processing transactions and following cash handling procedures.
  • Taking accurate orders and providing goods as required.
  • Washing up crockery and other items, storing as required once cleaned.

About you:

  • You will have good customer service skills being polite, well-mannered, and willing to assist visitors and staff.
  • You’re flexible, a good communicator and able to use your initiative.
  • Willing to undertake Mandatory and Statutory training yearly and 3 yearly.
  • Ability to handle a range of changing priorities and sensitive issues.

Facilities Administration Volunteer

 

Do you enjoy admin work or looking to build your admin skills and have a few hours to spare? 

Location: ellenor Hospice Gravesend

Hours: from 4 hrs per week
Times: 09:00-13:00 or 13:00-17:00

Role

As a facilities admin volunteer, you will be at the heart of our facilities team, dealing with all the maintenance, compliance and health and safety works for our Hospice and retail stores. This job is a varied role where no day is ever the same.

Role

As a grounds volunteer, you will be at the heart of our facilities team, dealing with all the general maintenance in and around the hospice facility. These tasks can involve grass cutting, weeding, grass watering, general maintenance, painting and much more.

Volunteer Call Handler / Administration Assistant

Location: ellenor Hospice Gravesend

Hours: from 4hrs

Times: 1pm – 5pm

Days: Wednesday & Friday

As a call handler / administration assistant you will be assisting with incoming phone calls to the hospice from staff and external queries ensuring a smooth running service for our hospice.

The Role:

  • Deal with incoming telephone calls from staff or external customers/clients
  • Recording accurate messages and passing onto the relevant staff member
  • Ensuring calls are transferred to the relevant teams
  • Basic admin jobs as required, such as printing scanning and filing

About you:

  • You will have a positive attitude and great people/ telephone manner.
  • Good communication skills both orally and written
  • You will be organised
  • Good listening skills
  • Basic IT Knowledge
  • Have a calm and approachable manner

Laundry Volunteer

 

Are you someone who finds joy in washing, ironing, and folding clothes? Do you have a few hours to spare each week to support a meaningful cause in your local community?

Hours: from 2-4 hrs per week between 8am -12 pm

The Role

As a Laundry Volunteer, you'll play a vital part in maintaining a warm, comforting environment for our patients and their families by:

  • Ensuring cleanliness standards are met in the processing of laundry
  • Washing, ironing, and folding clothes from our ward, adhering to hygiene requirements

Volunteer Window Cleaner

Location: ellenor Hospice Gravesend

Hours: 2-4 hours a month
Days: Choose a time that suits you – weekdays or weekends!

Do you have window cleaning experience and your own equipment? We're looking for a dedicated volunteer to help keep our hospice bright and welcoming for patients and their families.

The Role

As a Window Cleaner Volunteer, you'll play a key role in keeping our hospice sparkling by:

  • Cleaning windows inside and outside to a high standard
  • Ensuring all windows are streak-free and letting in plenty of natural light
  • Maintaining a fresh, clean environment for everyone at the hospice

Requirements:

  • Previous window cleaning experience
  • Own window cleaning equipment (including ladder, squeegee, and cloths)
  • A friendly, proactive attitude and attention to detail
  • Public Liability Insurance

Catering & Housekeeping Volunteer Co-ordinator

Location: ellenor Hospice Gravesend

Are you passionate about organisation and community support? Do you have a knack for coordinating schedules and managing teams? If so, we need you to help lead our dedicated volunteers in the Catering and Housekeeping departments at ellenor Hospice!

The Role:

As the Volunteer Coordinator for Catering and Housekeeping, you’ll be the driving force behind the smooth operation of our departments. Your role will include:

  • Managing Rotas: Creating and overseeing volunteer schedules to ensure coverage and efficiency in both the Catering and Housekeeping teams
  • Recruiting and Training: Identifying and onboarding new volunteers, providing them with the necessary training and support
  • Supervising Volunteers: Offering guidance and support to volunteers, addressing any concerns or issues that arise, ensuring all volunteers are compliant with mandatory training
  • Maintaining Communication: Acting as the main point of contact between volunteers and the department, ensuring clear and effective communication
  • Coordinating Activities: Organising and overseeing daily tasks to ensure that catering and housekeeping operations run smoothly and meet the high standards of the hospice

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Strong Organisational Skills: Ability to create efficient schedules and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Excellent Communication: Good written English, Confident in liaising with volunteers, staff, and management to ensure smooth operations, excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the aptitude and ability to learn in the role
  • Leadership Abilities: Experience in supervising or managing teams, with a supportive and motivational approach
  • Attention to Detail: Ensuring that all tasks and schedules are completed accurately and to a high standard
  • Previous Experience: Experience in volunteer coordination, administration, management or a similar role is preferred, but not essential

Host

Looking for a new challenge that will make a real difference to your local community this summer?

ellenor has a brand-new exciting volunteering role from July 2021.


As a Host, you will be the first point of contact for patients, their guests, and other visitors to the hospice. Always wearing a friendly smile, you’ll be there to greet and guide, lend a listening ear and be on-hand to carry out support tasks. No day is ever the same!

Volunteer Family Support Worker

Location: ellenor Hospice, Gravesend

Hours: Minimum of 3 per week

Times: Flexible (Between 09:00 – 17:00)

Days: Flexible (Monday – Friday and some Saturdays.

Do you have a few hours to spare each week and have the passion and dedication to help our Family Support Team ensure the delivery of high quality emotional and psychological support to our clients? We are excited to be expanding and developing our Family Support Service, and we are seeking to recruit empathic, compassionate individuals to provide support to patients and their families under the care of ellenor.

Your time will help our hospice to provide support and a safe haven to those who need it most. This is a wonderful opportunity to give back and be part of an amazing team!

The Role

As a Volunteer Family Support Worker, you will provide support to adult clients who are under the care of ellenor by.

  • Working within the Family Support Service to ensure that we are providing high quality care and support to clients
  • Working with clients to support their emotional and psychological needs when dealing with difficult situations and life circumstances including caring responsibilities, bereavement and life-limiting diagnoses.
  • Communicating important information regarding client care with substantive Family Support Workers to ensure a collaborative approach within the team e.g. safeguarding concerns are raised, key information is presented at MDT meetings
  • Attending regular meetings with our Family Support Workers (once per month minimum) to discuss your caseload and to ensure you are supported within your role
  • You will be required to attend one hour’s Clinical Supervision per month
