Current Volunteer Opportunities:

Volunteer Host

As a Volunteer Host you will be the first point of call for visitors to our hospice, providing them with a warm smile, welcome and assisting them with day to day enquiries.  

Location: ellenor Hospice Northfleet
Hours: from 4 hrs per week
Times: 09:00-13:00 or 13:00-17:00
Days: Weekends only - Saturdays or Sundays

Role

As a Host, you will be the first point of contact for patients, their guests, and other visitors to the hospice. Always wearing a friendly smile, you’ll be there to greet and guide, lend a listening ear and be on-hand to carry out support tasks. No day is ever the same!

As a Host, you will also be able to serve patients and customers at our Café. This is a great opportunity to start your volunteering journey at ellenor.

Some key traits you will need as a Host:

  • Are you, sociable, approachable, calm, cheerful, courteous, observant, and welcoming?

Volunteer Housekeeping Assistant

Do you enjoy cleaning and have a few hours to spare? 

Join the Housekeeping Team at ellenor in a volunteering opportunity that will make a real difference to your local community Hospice.

Location: ellenor Hospice Northfleet
Hours: 2 to 3 hours (or whatever you can spare)
Days: Any week day or weekend

Role

As a Volunteer Housekeeping Assistant, you will help maintain the Hospice to our high standards of cleanliness. You will be an integral part of our ellenor team.

Some light cleaning duties will include:

  • Hoovering
  • Sweeping
  • Mopping
  • Polishing
  • Laundry

Protective clothing and full training will be provided.

Housekeeping experience would be desirable but not essential. Must be able to work on your own.

Volunteer Kitchen Porter

Do you have a few hours to spare to help your local hospice? 

Location: ellenor Northfleet
Hours: From 3 hours per day 
Times: 11:00-14:00
Days: Monday- Sunday available

Role

We are seeking some dedicated and compassionate Volunteer Kitchen Porters to join our team at the hospice. As a Volunteer Kitchen Porter, you will play a crucial role in supporting the day-to-day operations of our hospice kitchen, ensuring a clean and organised environment that promotes the well-being of our patients, families, and staff.

Your commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and hygiene will contribute to the overall comfort and satisfaction of those under our care.

Some key duties as a Volunteer Kitchen Porter:

  • Washing dishes: ensuring that all items are thoroughly cleaned and sanitised.
  • Cleaning and sanitising surfaces: To clean and sanitise countertops, tables, workstations, and preparation areas to maintain a hygienic environment.
  • Disposing of kitchen waste, including food scraps and packaging materials, into designated bins.
  • Emptying and cleaning waste bins: Regularly emptying and cleaning waste bins throughout the kitchen area, including recycling and food waste, to maintain cleanliness and prevent odours.
  • Assisting with food preparation: There may be an involvement in basic food preparation tasks, such as peeling vegetables, chopping ingredients, handling and distributing food. 
  • Adhering to health and safety and food hygiene regulations at all times.

Volunteer Complementary Therapist

ellenor hospice offer patients and carers a range of complementary therapy treatments, with the assistance of qualified volunteers. 

Volunteers are the forefront of this essential patient service, providing important hands- on therapies to patients, carers and bereaved. 

We’d love to hear from you if you are qualified in aromatherapy, massage, reflexology or reiki (reiki as a second modality at level II or III)

Location: Therapy sessions are currently held off site at the Best Western Manor Hotel, Singlewell, DA12 5UQ.

Hours: We require volunteers on the following days and times, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday afternoons.

Requirements: You will be required to have qualifications at Level 3 Diploma in each modality, be a member of the relevant professional body for your therapy, have professional insurance, and be registered with the CNHC. (We will re-imburse you for your first year of registration if you are not already registered). 

Role

  • To deliver complementary therapies to patients, their carers and people who are bereaved
  • To provide therapy within an outpatient setting in a fit for purpose clinic room
  • To provide therapy on the inpatient ward at ellenor

You will also require an enhanced DBS check which we will arrange for you.

Wellbeing Therapeutic Activity Group Volunteer

Wellbeing volunteers are at the forefront of this essential patient service. They provide vital support to the ellenor staff, and facilitate a welcoming and comfortable environment; helping patients to relax, socialise and enjoy their day. A team of two to four volunteers work together on each shift.

Location: The Manor Hotel,Gravesend,DA12 5UQ

Hours: 10:00-15:00

Days: Tuesday, Wednesdays, Thursdays

Role

  • Greet patients as they arrive and help them to get settled – make them feel welcome by engaging in conversation
  • Help to welcome and integrate new patients by ‘showing them the ropes’
  • Refreshment provision to patients throughout the day as required – hot and cold drinks
  • Keep the kitchen area clean and tidy throughout the day, including use of the dishwasher (training provided)
  • Encourage patient involvement in Therapeutic Activity Groups, social, and recreational activities, and assist the person in participating in these
  • Work with patients in a 1 to 1 setting as directed by the Therapy Team
  • Conversations with patients and carers
  • Share information with ellenor staff relating to patients wellbeing
  • Be available for a pre-shift briefing from the Therapy staff – discuss any special needs of patients and the day’s proposed programme
  • Act as a ‘buddy’ for new volunteers, familiarising them with the daily routine and local procedures
