You don’t always know you’ll need hospice care, until you do

Most of us don’t think about hospice care until we need it.

For many people, hospice care is associated with the very end of life. But it is about much more than that. It can support people from diagnosis onwards, helping them live as well as possible with a life-limiting condition.

At ellenor, that care can be provided in people’s own homes, in the hospice and in the community. It is also there for the people around them, because when someone is seriously ill, their family is affected too.

For one supporter, her experience of ellenor changed what she thought hospice care would be.

“I thought a hospice would be a very sad place,” she says. “But it wasn’t like that at all.”

She arrived feeling anxious and unsure about what to expect. What she remembers most is how the team at ellenor put her at ease. They took the time to listen, answer her questions and reassure her.

It was a very different picture from the one she had imagined.

For another supporter, hospice care became part of his life when his father became ill.

“I hadn’t really thought about hospice care before,” he says. “It just wasn’t part of my world.”

That changed when his family needed ellenor.

It wasn’t just his father who was supported. The whole family was.

“We felt supported,” he says. “There was always someone there, helping us take each day as it came.”

For people who experience it, hospice care can be very different from what they imagined. It’s about having the right care and support when you need it, whether that’s help managing symptoms, someone to talk to, or practical support for you and your family.

At ellenor, that might mean helping someone feel more comfortable, managing problems such as pain or breathlessness, or providing emotional and practical support. It can mean caring for someone in their own home, while supporting their family too.

Often, it is only when hospice care becomes part of our own lives that we understand what it really means.

That is why our supporters matter.

They help make this care possible. They may never meet the people they help, but their support means ellenor can be there for families when they need us.

Some have experienced our care themselves. Others have seen what it meant to someone they love. And some simply believe that people living with a life-limiting illness should have the care and support they need.

They may never know who their support will help. But somewhere in our local community, a family may one day need ellenor for specialist care at home, or support when someone they love becomes seriously ill.

Our supporters help make sure that care is there.

Most of us will never expect to need hospice care. But if that day comes, ellenor can be there because people in our community have chosen to make it possible.
