Gift Aid Registration for a Donation

Did you know that gift aiding your donation can generate an additional 25% in income for us?

Add 25% more to your donation at no cost to you.

A Gift Aid declaration allows ellenor to claim tax back on eligible donations. It means that for every £1 you donate to ellenor we can claim back 25p, at no extra cost to you.

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid does not cost you a penny more, but can add an additional 25p to every £1 you donate. When ellenor receives a donation from a UK taxpayer, we’re entitled to claim an amount of tax (calculated at the basic rate of income tax in that year) paid on that donation. Once you have given your permission for us to do this on your behalf, there is no need for you to do anything else.

All that is required is that you must be a UK taxpayer and that would have paid or will pay sufficient Income and/or Capital Gains Tax to cover all the Gift Aid claimed on all your donations in that tax year. Please note that it is your responsibility to pay any difference.

The amount of tax we claim will be 25% of the total value of your donations in that tax year. Furthermore, if you are a higher taxpayer, you are also entitled to claim the difference between the basic rate which we will claim and the amount of tax you have actually paid. If you wish to cancel this declaration, change your name or home address or no longer pay sufficient tax on your income and/or capital gains, please contact us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Gift Aid is a UK government scheme that allows charities to claim back the basic rate of tax you’ve already paid on your donations.

If you’re a UK taxpayer and opt in, charities can claim an extra 25p for every £1 you donate, so a £10 donation becomes £12.50 at no extra cost to you.

You’re eligible for Gift Aid if you’re a UK taxpayer who pays enough UK Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax in a tax year (6 April–5 April) to cover the amount that ellenor will reclaim on your donations.

Taxes like VAT and Council Tax don’t count.

If you don’t pay enough qualifying tax to cover the Gift Aid claimed, you’re responsible for paying the difference to HMRC. Gift Aid allows charities to reclaim tax on donations you’ve already made (including up to the last four years) once you’ve completed a declaration.

You’re a UK taxpayer if you pay UK Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax — for example, if tax is deducted from your wages, you complete a self-assessment tax return, or you pay tax on savings, investments, pensions, or the sale of assets like property or shares. By signing up for Gift Aid, you’re confirming that you’ve paid enough qualifying tax and agree to cover any shortfall if you haven’t.

Any donations which are:
– From a non-UK taxpayer
– Made on behalf of someone else or a group of people e.g. a collection from work colleagues, friends, or proceeds from a coffee morning
– Made on behalf of a company
– You have been charged an entry fee, e.g. a ticket to an event
– Made in return for goods, rights, products or services
– You have entered a competition or raffle

Gift Aid can be applied to event sponsorship. Any donation which is eligible for Gift Aid will need to have an accompanying Gift Aid sponsorship form completed. This must include their full name, home address and postcode. Joint donations cannot be accepted. Each taxpayer must donate separately. To request a sponsorship form, please email events@ellenor.org or call on 01322 626 509.

The person taking part is responsible for checking whether sponsors qualify.

We rely on the extra income Gift Aid provides. Over £77,000 was claimed in Gift Aid in 2025. This makes a huge difference to the patients and families we care for – and we couldn’t do this without you!

Adding Gift Aid to a £20 donation would generate an extra £5. This could provide refreshments to families visiting a loved one on the ward.

Adding Gift Aid to a £50 donation would generate an extra £12.50. This could cover a 15 minute phone call to a patient from a specialist palliative care nurse in the Hospice at Home team.

Adding Gift Aid to a £100 donation would generate an extra £25. This could cover the cost of an Inpatient Ward admission for 1 hour.

You can complete the Gift Aid Declaration form above. If you have been given a donation form or a lottery return form, you can simply tick the Gift Aid box and follow the instructions.

Alternatively, you can call our Supporter Care team on 01322 626 509 or email them at supportercare@ellenor.org to request a form.
